Valle dell'Adige, Trento e Monte Bondone
The Valle dell’Adige is a wide and ancient valley floor flanked by high mountains. The first presence of mankind in this territory, consisting of Trento, Monte Bondone and the Piana Rotaliana, allegedly dates back to prehistory when, according to several historians, one of the main amber routes passed through it. Its value as a communication link between the Latin and Germanic cultures was exploited by the ancient Romans who built important roads for commercial trade and military conquest. The Valley today still preserves interesting findings from those times.
Trento was founded by the ancient Romans in the first half of the 1st century A.D. and in 46 A.D. it was described as splendidum municipium in an edict by Emperor Claudius. Below the city have been brought back to light the remains of the ancient “Tridentum”, today consisting of a wide and visitable archeological area with public and private buildings and spaces. Throughout medieval times, Trento was the seat of the Prince-Bishops and in the 16th century it hosted the famous Council of Trento, the event that coincided with the renovation of the city’s architecture in Renaissance style. Monuments well worth a visit are the Castello del Buonconsiglio, the Cathedral and its square, and the frescoed houses in Via Belenzani. The city is dominated in the West by Mount Bondone, a popular winter and summer holiday resort.
When travelling along Valle dell’Adige excellent sights to see are San Michele all’Adige and its “Museo degli Usi e dei Costumi della Gente Trentina”(Trentino’s Ethnographic Museum), Mezzocorona dominated by the mountain by the same name, on which stands the medieval Castello di San Gottardo, one of Europe’s most charming examples of medieval building within a “cave”, and Mezzolombardo, the rich farm town renowned for its production of Teroldego, a wine from autochthonous red grapes known and appreciated, as legend has it, even by the poet Ovid.
The surrounding area offers other worthwhile sights, such as the Altopiano di Pinè and Valle di Cembra. These areas were almost certainly used by the ancient Romans as alternative routes to the Via Claudia Augusta. Valle di Cembra and Altopiano di Pinè are also interesting tourist areas, famous for their pristine landscape, wines and cuisine.
