Valsugana Orientale, Tesino, Passo Brocon
Throughout the centuries, Valsugana has represented an important communication avenue between the Adriatic sea and the Alps, fully exploited by the ancient Romans on their Via Claudia Augusta.
The signs of those times, although few, are still part of everyday life, and are represented by location names, folklore traditions and inscriptions, as well as by ancient coins and artefacts found in various places, most of which are now on display in several local museums.
Witness to the area’s role as home to men since prehistoric times are some very significant and unique findings, such as, on the Marcesina plateau at Grigno, the Ernesto cave with its traces of brown bear, and the Dalmeri shelter, that has preserved the remains of the most ancient Palaeolithic hut of the entire Alpine region. At Castello Tesino, instead, an agglomeration of dwellings has been found, part of which excavated from the rock, dating back to protohistoric times (4th century B.C. – mid 1st century A.D.).
Human migration is evident in other significant works as well: well preserved castles (such as Castel Ivano or Castel Telvana) and fascinating ruins (Castel S. Pietro or Castel Nerva), Medieval churches with wonderful frescoes (such as San Rocco in Borgo Valsugana or Sant’Ippolito in Castel Tesino), paths for sheep and goat transhumance and cow pastures, all the way down in time to the extraordinary epic deeds of the printed item vendors who, along ancient but never-forgotten trails, reached Augsburg first and from there the heart of Europe.
