Alta Valsugana, Panarotta

2000 years ago, the Roman Via Claudia Augusta Altinate was the privileged link between Latin and Germanic cultures. Witness to this today in Valsugana are the military cippus in Tenna, the Roman sarcophagus in Levico Terme and most probably even the name “Strada Romana” (Roman road) in Ischia.

The Middle Ages gave the valley many castles, towers (Tor Quadra and Tor Tonda) and churches. Worthy of a visit are the Sant’Ermete church in Calceranica and the church in San Cristoforo.

Artistic and cultural attractions are not only Roman, however. Pre-protohistory has left us the archeological excavation site at Montesei di Serso, for example, while a number of churches, palazzi, castles date back to the Middle Ages (the castle in Pergine and Castel Selva in Levico), to the Renaissance (Magnifica Corte Trapp in Caldonazzo, Via Maier in Pergine), and to Austro-Hungarian times (the “forts line” in Levico, Tenna and Vezzena).

In addition to cultural tourism, Valsugana offers splendid lakes, such as Caldonazzo and Levico, the wild Lagorai mountain range, and the therapeutic arsenical-ferruginous thermal waters of the springs at Levico, Vetriolo and Roncegno.

Last but not least are the outdoor sports: the valley offers the chance to practice a wide range of them, from the most exacting (mountain-biking, trekking, sailing …) to more simple and health-conscious ones, such as walks amidst the green landscape. And what could be better, at the end of an adventurous day out discovering the Valley’s attractions, than the typical Trentino cuisine, capable of satisfying even the most demanding palates.
