I Mughi

The Mughi biotope includes several peaty hollows originated from the filling of ancient lake basins dug into the rocky substrate by Quaternary glaciers. Since these areas partially differ in terms of environmental characteristics, they host plant associations and botanical species that are very rarely found on the southern side of the Alps. In addition to the typical wetlands, the biotope includes a part of the surrounding forests and some meadow areas, rendering it of special importance as regards environmental variety. The name of the biotope underlines the presence on location of the dwarf pine, unusual at such low altitudes. Botanical studies conducted here hav revealed the presence of flora and plant units of extraordinary phytogeographic interest. The fauna populating the area is also varied and abundant, and includes amphibians such as the spotted salamander, the alpine newt, as well as various species of reptile such as the common lizard, the ring snake and the common viper. Many are the species of birds of prey: the goshawk, the sparrow-hawk, the buzzard, the pygmy owl and the tawny owl, as well as tetraonids such as the hazel hen. Among the mammals present, worthy of note are the common hare, the fox, the marmot, the badger and the chamois.
