Castel San Pietro
CASTEL SAN PIETRO TORCEGNO
Castel San Pietro rises on the top of Mount Ziolina, in the midst of a shady pine forest. Its strategic importance throughout the Middle Ages is the heritage of its prehistoric origin.
A fortified place since the late Stone Age and the Bronze and Iron Ages, it has preserved and returned stone objects, shards of pottery vases (nearby there was an oven for firing pottery), Roman coins and even a statuette of Apollo (a fortified place used for ritual purposes). The present day ruins (it was a fief of the Lords of Telve in the 12th and 13th centuries) consist of two sections of walls (once there were three), built according to a caisson technique with ashlars; here and there are remains of charred beams. This is why the castle was once known as the "Three Horns". During the First World War the location was used as an emplacement for several artillery batteries. It is now in a ruinous state.
