Castello di Dosso Maggiore
CASTELLO DI DOSSO MAGGIORE - BRENTONICO There are no end of theories on the origins of this castle, that can still be visited together with Castel Sajori on the Altipiano di Brentonico plateau. The few remains for some seem to lead to a quotation by Paolo Diacono, historian of the invasion of the Franks (590) and of the Longobards; but even before that the castle reminds of the pre-Roman, Raethian castellan. Dates start to be confirmed around the 13th century when, as property of the powerful Castelbarco family, it lived through the events that characterised this southern part of the Principality. Noteworthy is its favourable position as fief under the noble Madruzzo family. Access: on foot in 10 min. from Brentonico, by following a path that starts at the sports grounds.
